Student Intern Phoebe Kimble-Wilde interviewed women students in the faculty to find out a bit about the women engineers at the University, why they chose engineering, what interests them and what they want to do in the future. Here she interviews Computer Science student Adelina Balasa.

What are you currently studying at university?
Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.
What made you choose this subject? Did anything/anyone inspire you?
My father inspired me, but I was also thinking of the high employment rate and opportunities with this degree.
What was your favourite subject at school?
Painting.
What A Levels did you take (or alternative qualification) before university?
For Romanian schools, you take about 16 standard subjects like maths, biology, history, English, etc so it was still very broad before university!
Why did you choose Sheffield University?
It is one of the top Universities for Computer Science.
What do you like most about Sheffield University?
The Students’ Union!
What do you like most about your course?
We have our own lab and you can socialise easily with your course mates whilst doing work.
What is the most challenging part to the course?
Dealing with clients.
What do you enjoy doing? Hobbies and Interests?
Painting, drawing, reading, playing chess, volleyball and tennis.
What was the most challenging thing you have done in your life?
Going to university abroad.
What do you feel about being a woman in engineering?
I feel in a minority, which is a shame because many women can do engineering too.
What advice would you give to young girls thinking of studying engineering?
Definitely worth it!
